Minimum requirements for this job include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university with major course work in Civil Engineering or related field (Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, etc.)
  • Four (4) years of increasingly responsible engineering experience with at least two (2) of those years in water resources/drainage engineering.
  • Possession of a current Professional Engineer license (if not licensed in Texas, must obtain a Texas P.E. license within 6 months)
  • Valid driver license.


 The desired skillsets include:

  • Proficiency with industry-standard hydrologic and hydraulic models for floodplain mapping, and their applications within the FEMA and municipal regulatory environment.
  • Familiarity with Flood Warning System implementation and operation.
  • Familiarity with stream erosion processes and mitigation actions.
  • Familiarity with City of Fort Worth Stormwater Drainage Design standards.
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and GIS.
  • Strong interpersonal, time management, and communications skills necessary to effectively work with Federal & State agencies, the development community, residents, and internal City staff.
  • Experience working in a Municipality or Government Agency.

The Stormwater Management Division of the Transportation & Public Works Department is seeking a professional engineer with strong water resources and floodplain management experience to work with the Floodplain Administrator on all aspects of the City’s Stormwater Risk Identification program.  We are responsible for identifying and communicating a variety of flood-related risks including erosion areas and unmapped floodplains, as well as implementing Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and City of Fort Worth Floodplain Development and Stormwater Design standards.


To do this, we oversee the review of hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for public and private developments, including building permits, preliminary planning, final engineering plans, and floodplain map revisions.  Coordination with residents, the outside development community, and internal City departments are key components to the success of this position.  We are also developing an enhanced Flood Warning System and erosion area map products to help communicate a variety of Stormwater-related risks.  We are seeking a unique person who understands not only the technical side of hydrology and hydraulics, but also the responsibilities necessary for successful regulation, risk communication, and the ability to apply these concepts to proposed projects.


The City utilizes dedicated review staff and outside review consultants to assist with development review tasks.  A portion of this job will be to assist review staff members and consultants with interpreting City Ordinances and design standards, and acting as a technical liaison providing subject matter expertise on a variety of City drainage and floodplain management standards.
